Exciter circuit: do I have this right? 200

Hi all,

I'm trying to diagnose a battery drain and/or no charge condition on my '90 240. The alternator is new, the battery is good. The idiot light is good.

Sometimes I read 14.2 volts at the battery at idle; sometimes not. When I pull the D+ wire from the alternator, the idiot light does not light. With the D+ wire connected and the ignition switch in run position, I'm only reading 1.0V at D+ (Bentley specifies at least 2.0V).

So, per the FAQ: I've either got a problem with my ignition switch (which I suspect), or with the connection of the D+ line at the instrument cluster.

Would you:
a) check all solder connections at the cluster;
b) if those seem good, plunk down $90.00 (ouch!) for a new ignition switch?
