Clunk at rear wheel 900 1994

Have a '94 940 non-turbo sedan, 232k miles. Lately I've been hearing a clunk in the rear, mostly when I start accelerating after coasting, at say 45 mph. I checked front/rear u-joints, they seem to be ok, no play. I raised the rear end and hear a noticeable clunk at the driver's side wheel. I don't hear anything abnormal at the passenger side wheel. There seems to be a little play there, not much more than the passenger side. Play meaning reaction time between when I turn the wheel til when the u-joint moves or the wheel on the other side moves.

The only thing I know to be at the wheel is a bearing at the wheel end of the axle, but it doesn't seem logical that it would be the cause.

Any ideas?
