black smoke and a bumpy ride 700 1985

I have a 740 turbo that when i was going up a mountain the car started to cut in and out and not gain speed. I looked in my mirror and saw quite a bit of smoke comeing out the tail pipe. When i put it to the floor about two seconds later it rockets out of there. My thought is that its fuel going right through the engine just runnung way to rich so when I am at wot and let in more air it allows the right air/fuel mixture for how much fuel it getting dumped in. Would an air leak in the intercooler or hoses cause that. Or does anyone have any ideas?
