Strange sputtering? Help! 200 1991

So after an aggravating day at work, I was sitting in my beloved 240 waiting for a bridge to open. Suddenly, the car began sputtering violently. I turned the car off and when the bridge opened I started it up and drove it into a gas station parking lot. I let it sit for a minute, popped the hood, manually revved the throttle and it was fine. I carried on with my day.

I just went to see my girlfriend at work and on the way home I was doing about 40mph and it began to cut out on me. After bogging down it would suddenly buck and start driving rich for a second and then repeat.

I just searched "240 sputtering" on the ever reliable BrickBoard and found a library of results. Is this a very common problem? Is there a common solution?
