I took my 740GLE 16 Valve in for a smog check today, and the tech failed me because apparently my crank pulley/harmonic balancer has slipped and the timing notch on the pulley is way off from the marks on the timing cover. (To the best of my understanding, this doesn't actually affect the ignition timing, or any other aspect of the emissions controls, and the thing passed the tailpipe emissions tests with flying colors, so why the guy decided to give me a hard time on this, I don't know; but whatever.)
As far as I know, the car still has the original crank pulley. (I changed the timing and balance shaft belts several years ago, but I don't remember doing anything with it.) In browsing the 700/900 FAQ, it appears that the Volvo special tool no. 9995284 is recommended for aiding in removing and re-tightening the pulley bolt; however, I did not see any indication whether this tool works with the B234F engine, and FCPGroton doesn't include it under the "Engine Parts-Mechanical" listing for this engine (although they do for other 700 series cars). IPD also stocks a similar-looking tool, but they only indicate it's for the B230. Can anyone confirm that this tool works with the B234F?
Alternately, I've seen a recommendation of using the "rope trick" to immobilize the engine (sticking several feet of clothesline into a combustion chamber through the spark plug hole). Has anyone tried this with the B234F?
