164 Front bumper 140-160

The big bumpers on my 75 are mounted with two crash absorbers. They are designed to take a small impact and recover, thus saving the body in a parking lot or stop light bump situation. Moving the bumper closer to the car would mean losing the absorption feature.

The mounts look like a small shock absorbers with a flange welded on one end which the bumper bolts to. The other end looks just like a piece of pipe with a hole drilled through it. There is a clamp that goes around each one and bolts that go through the holes to secure them to the frame rails.

To shorten the distance, you would probably have to get some pipe that is the same diameter as the absorbers and weld up something similar. What ever you do, don't try to cut the absorbers, whether there is gas or a spring inside I don't know, but there is a lot of potential energy stored up in them that could, if released cause serious injury.

A 74 bumper may mount differently, the parts diagrams I have seen show the mounts made of some type of big rubber cylinder.

The guy that owns/owned that white 75 posts on the board regularly. I think his handle is b4ford.
