Oil Filter Jammed 200 1991

My college-aged son complained that he couldn't remove the oil filter from his 1991 240 wagon. When he came home I noticed that the filter was jammed against a large rubber fitting which I assume was part of an engine mount.

Any idea what could have caused this, and what's the best remedy?
