Overdrive Stuck 700 1989

My overdrive has been randomly turning on and the switch won't disengage it. I don't want overdrive and was told I could just pop the switch out of the shifter and disconnect it. I just did this, started it up, and the light came on again!? Does anyone have a solution to permanently disengage the OD?
