Question about MAF 200

Hi,

I have a 91 240 that bogs down when in gear. It was mildly annoying for months but would backfire once and then run good the rest of the day. Now it will no longer drive or even idle in park properly. I believe it is a bad MAF I unplugged it and it now idles fine in park or drive but when i give it gas in drive it bogs down and dies. I read somewhere that with it unplugged it should be able to limp home this one won't. Should it be driveable unplugged? Am i looking in the right spot? I should take it in but months of being out of work make a garage an impossibility any help would be appreciated.
