correct bolts for catalytic coverter 900

I have a 1995 940 driven for a few years in New York, I believe. There is an exhaust leak where the downpipe meets the catalytic converter. I figured there was a rusted hole somewhere but when I went to inspect I could see that the bolts are very rusty and, to my amazement, the lowest bolt had rusted away in the midsection of the bolt - so it is now in two halves. The leak might be fixed by physically tightening up the joint with a new bolt. Tomorrow, I'd like to deal with this but I have a few questions. Can I just go to Advanced Auto and by a generic bolt or do I need some especially hard bolt? Also, is there a flange between the two pipes that also can rust out or deteriorate? Tomorrow, I'd like to merely replace one bolt and deal with the problem in the summer but I'm wondering what else may occur over the winter. Also, why would a bolt rust out before a pipe? It is the lowest bolt.
