ECU problem? - no closed loop? 900 1993

Before admitting to a bad O2 sensor, I decided to disconnect it and see if some rough running problems would appear better without it. I disconnected both connectors and then disconnected the battery for a few minutes to clear the ECU. After driving the car for 10 minutes, I got no warning light, no codes and as far as I could tell, no closed loop operation. What's with this? I shut the car off and restarted it, still no codes. Idle was rough, like it was running rich. I reconnected the O2 sensor with the engine running and the idle smoothed out considerably. So I'm back to the drawing board again.

Help!

Ron
