vague drifty steering 200 1993

Hello all-

A question about handling: I have a 240 wagon that has vague, sometimes unstable-feeling steering--especially when going down paved roads with very slight ruts from heavy vehicle traffic. With entire front end up and watching for play in steering (steering column u-joint, play in rack, tie-rod ends)--nothing--everything seems quite tight. There is a tiny 2mm? play in the driver's (left) side when grabbing the tire at 9 and 3 o'clock and shaking it back and forth. My mechanic suggested that I've got something wrong with the REAR suspension. What could that be? It has new torque arm bushings, new rear trailing arm bushings. Panhard? Thanks in advance..
