Mixed Messages - Is 1992 940GL Odometer Problem Electronic or Gear Related? 900 1992

The odometer (trip and regular)have quit on my 1992 940GL at 220,000 miles. I have done a lot of searching through the website, and have taken a few of the links to the odometer parts vendors. My speedometer works perfectly. So I thought that the odometer gears were probably ruined. One of the vendors told me my odometer (he said it was made by Sandan Seiki)generally suffers electronic problems, not gear problems. Then I read in several places that if the speedo is operating correctly, then the problem is in the gears.

I'm hoping to have a better understanding of the odometer before I tear into the dash. Does anyone have any experience with the odometer workings on the '92 940? Is it different than the other series? And if it is the gears, where can I find them?

Thanks!
