Have this T shirt,
And the other BBer's have the right track. One quick test can help sort this out.
If you have a remote starter switch handy you can sort this out in a hurry on the next no start. Only took me a couple of years to sort out all the clues due to the fact you could jump the car and it would start every stinking time. Turn the key to Pos II, add the switch between the plus battery terminal and the starter solenoid and hit the trigger. If the starter hits and the car starts, it's the Neutral Safety Switch. Until the new one arrives, you can put a jumper across the connector and the car will start every time. It will also try and start in gear of course so be warned.
If you don't have a remote starter switch there is a test more on the wilder side of things. You can use the Red Neck starter switch to test it. Turn the key to Pos II and then crimp a spade lug to a at least 24 gauge wire and connect it to the starter Solenoid terminal. Wearing a glove on the hand you are using to hold the wire, touch the wire to Plus battery terminal. The sparks fly, the starter hits and yes it's the NSS. I personally don't like that test but it has been done.
Nothing happens when you hit the switch, get a broom handle and thump the top of the starter and see if she hits when you turn the key. That would head you to a new starter most likely. I have also carried a starter stick until the starter could be replaced a few years back.
Good Luck,
Paul
