delayed reverse when cold, any ideas? 200 1985

I am wondering if it is a linkage issue. Try nudging your shift lever a little and see if as you move it ever so slightly you get it to engage move completely in reverse. You need to do it in both directions, lever forward and rearward. As for fluid, I am very conservative and in an older transmission I would stick to the basic fluid and not try to put synthetic or any additives in. Reason is I would be concerned that old seals and gaskets may react to the change in composition.
