1994 Volvo wagon

My 1994 940 wagon won’t start. When I turn the ignition on I hear the pump in the tank but not the external pump. But the weird thing is it might sit a day or so and it will start. I can drive it down the street and all of a sudden it stops running. All electric is on but the engine stops. Help a guy whose trying to keep his car running> THANKS
