Transmission won't shift out of 1st when cold

The other thing that I've been noticing is that once the car is warmed up and working there is a slight loss of power after shifting from 1st-2nd. Does this clue at anything?

I've found a $200 local replacement tranny but am seriously doubting my ability to switch one of these things out. Searching for a thread that explains the job didn't help anything except waste 2 hours of the work day and aggravate my worries.
