fuel tank 700 1987

I have a problem with the driveshaft touching the fuel tank when I come from a dead stop. It appears the torque of the driveshaft shifts just enough to the port that it abraids the fuel tank. There is a small abrasion on the driveshaft, about 1/8", that reflects the contact. My question is can I shift the fuel tank slightly to the port to take this contact situation out of play, I had this matter diagnosed by a qualified mechanic with the suggestion of replacing the fuel tank but I would think there is some lateral play in the mounting to permit adjustment without replacement.
Thank You, Phil
