AW Transmission repair or replacement? (San Diego) 200

I have a failing transmission in a '93 240 and I'd like to do something about it before I get stranded. I've tried all the easy fixes to no avail.

I described the symptoms here: Transmission won't shift out of 1st when cold

I've sourced a used AW71 for $200 from a local 'parts warehouse' but I'm not sure if this is a job I should tackle alone. Alternatively, I could get a shop to rebuild or replace it (does anyone know of a decent place in San Diego to do so)?

In terms of confidence, I know that I can undo/redo bolts, but how easily is this thing let down, moved, replaced and how impossible will those bolts be to undo? The prospect of doing it has me pretty nervous, but so did cleaning the flame trap for the first time.

Advice? Wisdom?

(Also, are the AW70, AW71, AW71-L and AW70-L all interchangeable?)
