overdrive problem 200 1993

Several weeks ago my 1993 Volvo 240 developed intermittent overdrive problems. It would shift out of that gear when driving but I could re-engage it via the push button on the gear shift lever. Sometimes the panel light would come on, sometimes not and there was little correlation between the light and the overdrive becoming engaged. I replaced the relay switch and all was good.

Last week, I noticed that it was shifting into overdrive at a higher rpm than usual. The button on the shift lever would still engage/disengage and the panel light would show accordingly. Yesterday, no overdrive. The shift lever button still lit and dimmed, but no overdrive or downshifting. I pulled the relay, still no downshifting but no panel light either. I put the relay switch back in, am wondering if I need to try another one, consider the solenoid as being the problem, or think about the transmission.

Suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
