240 engine/standard trans replacement 200 1990

Hi. this is my first post here, hope this is the right place for this comment.

My 245 wagon has decided to instruct me in a new years 'meme'...."go forward only"

The reverse gear expired with much mechanical comment on the last day of the year, and now I plan every trip according to the parking configuration of the destination.

I am looking for another trans, or engine/trans (this one has 280K) in New England, and/or some advice on whether my idea needs tuning on a practical level.

Maybe I should look for another brick? who are the reliable sources for brick repair/purchase in this area?

so many questions, thanks for your patience.
