Noisy power steering pump pulley 900 1995

Hi
I was wondering if anyone has experienced this before?
I get an intermittent squawk from around the power steering pump. Its not the type of belt squeal that I have known in other cars when the fan belt was loose. More of a squawk which comes and goes. Sounds awful. If I place my hand on the reservoir cap, I think I can feel it humming.

Would this be the bearings on the pump/pulley which are worn do you think?
The serpentine belt is nice and tight although I admit it is old and looks like it is glazed.

Is it a question of having to replace the complete pump unit?

Is it possible to do a test to ensure it is the pump by removing the serpentine belt and starting the car up to see if it is indeed the pump. (Of course, it could be the alternator which resides just under the power steering pump so the test would not be definitive but at least it would confirm its not the cambelt or cambelt pulley or water pump.) I don't think its the A/C compressor which sits was down at the bottom as the squawk does not alter in sound when I turn the A/C on or off.

Any ideas?
Thanks
Pete
