overdrive problem 200 1993

Good afternoon.

I had previously responded that the relay switch made no clicking noise when engaged/disengaged, I was wrong. I pulled its placement out a little and tried again, yes there is a definite clicking noise. I replaced the fuse and tried the temporary jumper another poster had suggested, still no shifting into overdrive. A similar set of symptoms occurred on my 1985 240GL and the mechanic diagnosed it as a failed transmission. I would much prefer a problem with the solenoid, but it is wet and cold outside — and I am an old lady not much interested today in crawling under my car!

Ay other suggestions?

Thanks.
