safety compared to newer cars 200 1988

As I get older (close to 30) I begin to worry more and more about safety, especially while driving in city traffic where there are lots of rear ending and side collisions.

Doing google searches I can't seem to find out how the 240 safety compares to newer cars with airbags. There's a youtube video showing an older volvo wagon loosing severely to a newer compact car on a head on collision.

Does anyone have any information? I always thought the heavy steel cars keep me safe however I'm beginning to wonder and need reassurance....Thanks
