So after getting my speedo and tach working on my 91 744 rex, the speedo in my 92 745 T just went out. Like I need something to do.
needle and odometer/trip are out. I went thru the speedo circuits and checked all the capacitors with the DMM. One was bad so it got replaced. That did not do it.
I really need the odometer to work b/c the fuel gauge gets stuck (next ordeal)
I broke open that security black box that houses the speedo sensor male female connection, the one behind the drive side rear wheel well.
I disconnected the junction and did the '4 shorts per second' method per FAQ to the speedo end. No needle movement up front on the speedo. The car was running during this. OK, this means bad speedo - right?
Ground on the footwell is good. Wires are good.
I then put the connection together back in the back box.
Next, I hook up the 10V AC DMM to the #1 and #2 sensor leads on the 4 pin speedo connector to see if the voltage goes up when I drive it. Nada! What is going on?
The ohms on the sensor is approx 700 ohms. This fluctuates up to 1k when moving.
Next, I will swap the rebuilt clusters between cars and see then.
And one more thing. I checked the '4 shorts per second' trick on the good 91 car. I put needles into the two wires just before the black box, connected some wire leads and did the shorting after running the car. NADA, but this car is good. However, I did not disconnect the sensor lead this time. Does that make the difference?
Any ideas folks?
