My own taillights sourcing question 200 1987

I know, it's been beat to death. The lights are just crap on my sedan. Initially I would get the lights warning signal on when turning on the headlights, while all headlights and taillights were working fine, as they do now. Then intermittently the third brake light would give the warning signal because it would not work occasionally. Now the third brake light is always dead - always signal on my dash when I press the brakes. In short, taillights illuminate everything that's supposed to but give warning signal, the third brake light does not work. And the taillights plastic is just crap, completely falling apart and is the most embarrassing, and probably the only embarrassing part of the car.

Splurge on an OEM for $400 and be a happy mon? Not if I have to pay for it! That's just ridiculous pricing.

But, IPD has the aftermarket ones for $100 each side. But wait, there is more, lampsandlenses has them for $59 each side.

So, buy the cheapest ones? IPD or lampsandlenses? If they last two years I will be just fine with it. I also wouldn't mind gluing and soldering some pieces to make them work better.

But what are the dangers? Melting plastic over time? I think I can live with that. What about short circuits? Common? Occasional? What about blowing my whole electrical system out of whack? I don't really do electrical.

Does the third brake light run off the taillights? In other words, if I replace the taillights with the circuits, can I expect the third light to start working again?

Thanks as always!
