Outer tie rod end replacement 200 1990

Need to replace BAD tie rod end(my son's car, I guess stereo too loud!)(he'll do the work, I just want to oversee it) and have some questions:
1) Can I place something to support the arm and bang on the top or do I need a tool? (like ball joint separator fork?)
2) Any threadlock on either of the threads?
3) Just tighten the top lock nut I would think, no specific torque right?
4) Only 1 side seems to be really bad (the car is sitting til the work is done)I'm just doing 1 side, which is OK, correct?
5) More for the future: I bought a cheapo $13 part at the local parts store. They had Moog brand for $40. I didn't want to wait a couple days for FCPGroton(where I usually shop) but they had cheapo for $9 and OEM for $20. Any opinions?
6) Count the turns to take out old, and use the same for new? Friend said brands can differ, but that makes no sense to me because the threads need to be the same.
Thanks!!
