Steel timing gear knocking sound 120-130 1969

I recently installed a steel timing gear set that I bought on eBay and a modified cover with the neoprene seal from IPD on my B20. Everything went together rather easily (after getting some help from members of this board). However on start up, there was a pronounced knocking which, using a stethoscope, I traced to the area of the cam gear. Other than the disconcerting knock, the engine ran fine.
I removed the cover, gears and inspected everything including the thrust flange and spacer ring, and everything looked OK.
So I reinstalled the fiber gear set (which was perfectly sound. It didn’t need replacing but I had the steel set laying around, so I thought – why not?). On start up, the knock was gone and the engine ran as sweetly as ever.
So my question is: What might be the source of knock?
