Can't get the timing belt on! Help Please! 900

I was following the Haynes manual directions for changing the timing belt. Before I slipped off the old belt, it said to slacken the belt tensioner nut. Pull on the belt to compress the tensioner spring. Lock the tensioner in this position, either by tightening the nut again or by inserting a nail or similiar into the hole in the tensioner shaft.

I chose to tighten the nut again rather than putting a nail in the hole in the tensioner shaft. The belt slipped off pretty easily, but I can't get the new belt on. I tried to put the old belt back on to see if I could compress it further, but I can't get the old belt on either. I am totally stuck. What should I do?
