Center Support or Rear Wheel bearing noise 900

Our 940 wagon with 113000mi has developed quite a whine from either the rear end or the center support bearing. Is is true that if the car is shifted into neutral while at speed the center bearing would no longer be spinning and the noise, if it is the center support bearing, would also fade or at least change? When I do this the whine continues so my bet is the rear wheel bearings or differential. Is there any good method to determine wheel bearing noise vs. the differential? I hope wheel bearings because I don't have the time or patience left to mess with changing the rear axle.
