fuel sender retaining nut 700 1992

Hello All,
I tried replacing the fuel sender on my 1992 745T and for the life of me I cannot get the plastic retaining nut that retains the fuel sender assembly back on. It is about 4.5" in diameter, plastic, and it is similar to a mason jar lid. I have tried for hours to get the nut started and it always wants to start a little sideways then it spins back off the threads as I continue turning. To my eyes the threads do not look damaged. However, I did notice in the Volvo instructions that the nuts can deform over time (it as been about 4 hours since I started the job) and this has me a little worried. Am I going to have to bum a ride to the dealership for a new nut or does anyone have any advice from doing this before? I have to admit that I am quite humbled by this since I have never spent 3 hours trying to start a nut before and I am staring to run out of patience and skin on my fingers. Any help or wisdom is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Mike
