When a coil goes bad? 1988 240 speed 200

Any way to tell when a coil is going or is suspect,symptoms? Car seems like it wants to stall but never does yet. Its a 5 speed take it out of gear to stop idles fine until it gets down under 1k then it drops to almost 500 rpm and then levels off to 7-800 range. i seem to remember reading about a coil causing rpm drops?
