Steel timing gear install Chapter 2 120-130

Today I returned to the challenge of installing a set of steel timing gears in my B20. I posted chapter 1 of this saga on Jan. 27/ 2010.

I removed the fibre gear set, which did not produce the knock that the steel set did and examined everything closely. I note that there is a circular wear pattern on the cam gear side of the pressure flange, approximately .015” deep, corresponding in diameter to the hub of the cam gear. Is this amount of wear excessive? Both Walrus 3 and “122 and 940 and too many” pointed out this could be the reason for the knocking.

Then I notice something I didn’t earlier. The outside diameter of the spacer ring is less than the inside diameter of the pressure flange, which means the flange does not impinge on the spacer ring at all. I have been unable to find a photo of the flange and ring in any of my manuals, but the parts explosions I have appear to indicate that the flange should be holding the ring in place, which makes sense to me. In my situation, with the pressure flange in place, the ring is relatively free to move although it is constrained, but not tightly, by the back of the Woodruff key. I haven’t removed the spacer ring, but it doesn’t look like it has been damaged.

I have taken a couple of pictures, but I’ve never had much success posting photos on this board. However if it will help diagnose this situation, I will try again.

So folks, I’m pretty much convinced that I need to replace both the flange and the spacer. Any thoughts to the contrary?
