Pinging under load 200 1993

Hello All,

1993 244 - 284K Runs fine, gets about 24-25 mpg in winter in upstate NY, no codes.

I noticed yesterday, during a long drive, especially going up moderate hills, where the auto tranny did not downshift, that the car has some preignition.

It always pinged a trifle under that kind of load but it seems to be occuring a bit more. I switched one tankful to mid grade gas - I think 89 octane and the pinging was gone.

Should I just switch to 89 octane vs the 87 all the time?. Other question, is there any way to cure this preignition and what is causing it.
