Seized thermostat housing nut

1994 944t 78K

I acquired this car last summer. While doing the usual maintenance items as well as checking the car over I found that the nuts on the thermostat housing were seized.

Literally days of PB Blaster as well as tapping the nut and stud only resulted in being able to remove one of the nuts. I resorted to heat (Mapp gas), but the nut remains tight. Granted I did not heat it to cherry red but decided I did not want to go ahead with more heat.

My next thought is to use my die grinder with an abrasive wheel and simply cut the nut parallel to the threads on the stud. I figure that once I get just a bit into the crown of the threads on the stud it should be easy to remove after additional soaks of PB Blaster.

What other suggestions might you have?

Randy
