the problem was far beyond that. all the plastic tab and tab holders had slowly melted/broken/cracked/crumbled off. I had the housing on and off and on and off, trying to remold the part with epoxy+various plastics. I eventually gave up, jammed the wrong sided holder in there and did the direct soldering.

the brake lights work great now, except I get the bulb warning light on because the 'modified' RH side gets 0.1 V more (at the bulb) than the original non-solder LH side.
