Relationship between upshift light and rough running? 1990 240 200

I notice that my upshift light flashes with various degrees of intensity relative to how badly my car is running. The car, when running, usually runs as if on two or three cylinders. During these times, the upshift light flashes continually. However, there was a brief time recently where it idled and ran perfectly for a short time. During this time, the upshift light performed as usual.

Is there some connection to be made between the behaviour of the upshift light and the problems my car is running? What would cause the upshift light to behave this way? I had a long-running thread about my problems going before, but had put the car on the back-burner until I thought about the upshift light today when I cranked it over a few times. Thoughts?

I'm hoping someone else has had a similar experience.
