'96 960 intermittent no start-immobilizer? 900

Hey all,
Our new-to-us '96 960 with 154K on it has done something weird twice now. The first time, it happened to me and I thought I had triggered the keyless remote which was in my pocket (not on my key ring). I turned the key to start the car and all the warning lights were flashing on-off as I turned the key to start the car-no starter action-I think the horn (or was it an alarm?) was honking weakly. I got out of the car and locked, then unlocked it (can't remember if I used the remote or the key) and the car started normally. The second time it happened to my wife-it could not have been the remote being falsely triggered because she lost the batteries and cover. She got it started the same way after calling me. Hope it's not some weird immobilizer issue-I know those can be pesky in FWD/AWD Volvos. One thing that may be very pertinent here- I noticed the driver's door switch is not working now (it used to)-the dome light does not come on with that door opening-all others, it does-could this be the whole problem?
Thanks in advance!
sredwine
