Track down oil leak by cleaning engine? 200 1993

It it possible to clean accumulated oil and grime the engine (to track down an oil leak) without damaging electrical parts (or stalling out...see previous post).

I have oil dripping off the drain plug but can only tell that it's from somewhere above.

Being able to see through the grime on the clutch fluid and antifreeze reservoir would be handy too.
