Temp gauge fluctuation (1985 so no comp board) 200

This past fall I replaced the thermostat with a new 92 degree unit (with the piddle valve). This weekend, i noticed that the temp gauge had dropped to the cold position, but the heater was still cooking us. The gauge then came back up to about 8 o'clock and cycled back to cold a few times. The resivoir was up to the full mark, and the hoses were full and hot. Any ideas? This morning the gauge came up to 8 o'clock and stayed there. Bad thermostat? Bad sending unit?
