Brake Pedal Spongy/Less Responsive; Fluid Low 200 1986

I'm in Brooklyn and it sure has been a cold winter. My brake failure light has been coming on randomly. The first thing I checked was the fluid and it was low. I added some only to have the same problem a few days later and then one more time.

I haven't had that problem now for a while but as of yesterday, the brake pedal feels spongy, that is, I need to push it further down to get a response and it feels weak/much less responsive.

This is a serious problem so I think I should get to a mechanic ASAP. Should I just go to MIDAS or are they a rip-off (since it's a chain)? From reading previous posts, seems this could be the master cylinder, worn out brake lines, junction box.

And if I want to keep costs down, should I personally order parts via IPD of FCP Groton once the issue is diagnosed? I don't want to be taken for a ride here with major mark-ups on parts.
