Trouble installing rear Bilstein HD's-91 940 SE Wagon 900 1991

Hoping someone can give some helpful tip on this. I reviewed the rear shock installation on FAQ but still having problems fitting the upper portion of the shock as it just won't fit inside the upper mount opening in the wheel well. The shock came with thick rubber bushings that mount on each side of the ears-2 on the upper ear and 2 on the lower ear. The shock I removed, not a Bilstein, did not have any rubber bushings on the ears. If I removed the rubber bushings it appears to fit inside the upper mount. This is making me crazy as I've tried several different methods of getting it in there. Any tips on compressing this bad noy as well to make things a bit easier?
