Strange noise from rear wheel/axle 200 1988

I have a weird intermittent noise coming from the rear end of my '88 245. I thought it was worn brake pads because it starts making the noise when I apply the brakes and then fades away as I release the brakes. It's a high pitched swishing/whooshing noise with a slight pulse/oscillation that depends on speed.

I forgot to check the pad thickness when I had the wheel off this afternoon, but the visible side of the rotor looked ok and didn't have any grooves. Another reason I'm doubting it's worn pads is because I heard the same noise several months ago and it went away until a few days ago.

A couple friends suspect a wheel bearing. I looked in my Bentley manual and discovered that there aren't wheel bearings in the rear. Could it be an axle bearing? Is there a way to check them? What else should I look at?
