I am doing a t/belt for a friend of mine (85 240 135K). I was basing the repair on previous Volvos running in a similarly ugly manner (no acceleration sounded like it was missing very badly)
So I exposed the timing belt and asked my son to hang the belt on it
Now P.J has done four belts in the last year and is fairly astute when it comes to putting a car together. I put it back together, not only did it not run it wouldn't even pretend to start. Fact it sounded a lot like the timing belt was broken.
I disassembled it and have been fussing with it for a day or so longer than is probably necessary. I also can't get the notch on the harmonic balancer to meet up with the pointer on the t/b cover while it is at TDC.
In days of yore I would take of the valve cover, pull the spark plugs, distributor cap and horse the engine around till I could find #1 TDC then I would replace the timing gears etc.
On this motor the intermediate shaft sets the dist, and the top sprocket sets the valves as closed the bottom pulley sets the crank timing/position.
The crank pulley is very easily removable. One one side there is a dimple and obverse to it is a protrusion. The mark on the case is pretty easy to see and lining it up should be no hassle. But it just ain't so. So I can find TDC, and the marks line up but if I replace the timing cover the notch on the harmonic balancer is way, way off.
I have pictures but have yet to figure out how to attach them to the posts.
So what am I missing?
I am thinking maybe I'll do a compression test, after I get home from work.
I will also share my pictures should anyone have the urge to see them.
Thanks as always
Paul
