Are aw70 and aw71L converters interchangeable? 900

Hi,
My neighbour and I have just replaced the aw71L torque converter in my son's 940 with what we believe is a good converter from an aw70 transmission out of a 1988 240.

Our problem is the transmission will now not engage gears.

Are the aw70 and the aw71L converters interchangeable? We appreciate the aw70 does not have lock up.
