Help with engine ID 200 1988

I have had my '88 245 for about a year and a half. I bought it from a dealer who said the previous owner killed the original engine so they replaced it. I *think* he said they put a B23F in it rather than another B230, but can't find the notebook with all that info.

How can I figure out what I've got under the hood?

(Going back to the dealer isn't an option, and even if it was I wouldn't trust the guy as far as I could throw him.)
