Survey: what has sent your 240 home on the hook? 200

Now that I've got the wifemobile on the road again, I've decided after doing some car shopping that everything newer than a 240 sucks, and I'm ready to put the money into what we've already got. I'm handy enough to repair anything that can happen to a 240 (except auto trans rebuilding, maybe) but I need to be able to predict the nearly unpredictable. She's got no problem with me taking the car to the shop every month or so for repairs, but we can't have her being stranded on the road. So, I ask the board, what to do to get near new car reliability? I know all the typical old car stuff, belts hoses, etc. but anything specific to our cars?
