ECU test/replacement - ? 200 1983

MY 83 had the wrong temperature sensor installed.Someone put in a sensor with a white housing and I needed one with a blue housing. This is for a non turbo. The wrong one was in there for at least 10 years and it always ran poorly when cold(very rich). But with the new sensor it runs great at all temperture.Over the years I replaced the fuel pressure regulator,AMM,all tune up parts, cleaned the thottle body(very important). But this was the smokin gun.Now how could I have made this mistake? NAPA auto parts books my be wrong on the application. The white body 023 may be for a turbo while the blue body 026 is for non turbo.AT least check this before changing over to 2.2lh.
