I posted earlier in the month about my m40 not shifting into first or second. I also posted about a roadtrip and what to bring. The road trip fell through due to scheduling conflicts, and its a good thing too, as the transmission problem I had earlier this month has sort of bloomed. On Friday I pulled away from work in first gear and suddenly, just before I was about to shift into second it starts making horrible noises and juttering. I put it into second and its smooth. I come to a stop sign and try to pull away in a first thats just making horrible noises and not really pulling. So I opt for starting out in second to get me off the main road. I take it back to work and feel things out around the parking lot. The sound is pretty gut wrenching and is slowly making its way into second gear. I drained the transmission oil this weekend and it was a brilliant silver w/ what looks like a scary amount of metal on the magnet (first two pictures). I've got an extra m40 hangin about so I started cleaning it out and found a couple pieces in it. 2 m40's w/ a lot of loose metal in em. The replacement tranny moves into all its gears fine... but the loose metal inside has me doubting its usefulness (last of the three pics). I can't figure out where the set screw goes, as all visible ones from the top are accounted for. Then that little piece of broken metal is beyond me... anyone know what thats from exactly? I didn't get a chance to take the bad m40 out of the car, as i don't have a spot where i can leave it be w/ the engine supported. Is there a way to support the engine w/o the tranny attached and still move the car around?
