Oil pressure not working 200 1989

Hi co-volvo's
I have a 89 240dl 5 speed, my car has a factory oil pressure gauge on the right just bottom of the rpm gauge. My question i am trying to get it working, i replace the sending unit, check the gauge connection it has volts and ground, lights on gauge works. I unplug the sending unit wire, bypass and attach a wire directly to the gauge but needle jumps all the way upon switch on and engine running. Please help, do i have a faulty gauge? Plus note i have a wire hanging just after the oil plug is that related.
thanks,
rusty240
